    February Air Empty February Air

Post by Marianne Delancy Fri Oct 05, 2012 4:00 pm

    Some random Muggle place.

Marianne hummed, staring at her reflection in the mirror for the millionth time, hardly noticing the people milling around her. Running her hands through her newly brown hair, she grinned childishly. She'd dyed her hair so many times before, but there was something more permanent about doing it the Muggle way.

Though she knew that changing it back would be as simple as waving her wand, it was still refreshing to not use magic for once. With her blood status more Muggle than wizard, it seemed only fair.

Handing the mirror back to the hairdresser, she offered him a large smile and a hug. Grabbing her coat, she gave the rest of the employees a sweeping wave before heading out into the blistery winter air.

Shivering slightly, she pulled her coat tighter around her as she walked. She'd find somewhere less busy to apparate home soon, but now she'd just enjoy the fresh air, no matter how cold it was.

No matter how many months or years she'd spend in the cold, Adria just could not get used to this sort of chill. Sure, she preferred the winter over summer, for quite a many reasons, but sometimes, it got a little too much.

She was glad that she did not have to go to the club today, it was her day off. The thought made her think of Nate, and she smiled a little to herself, even though she was not that happy about the way he had just turned up at her work place, and then, not even look at her while she was on stage.

Does he like her less, now that he knew?

There mere doubt was enough to sadden her and she bit her lip. It didn't seem like he cared, right? Perhaps he really was different..

She stopped at one of the buildings, and sat down on the pavement, leaning her back against it. It was quiet, there weren't that many people around. She liked it. Maybe she'd just sit around here for a while.

February Air Empty Re: February Air

Post by Marianne Delancy Fri Oct 05, 2012 7:09 pm

Watching her breath mill out around her, Marianne rubbed gently at her reddening nose. She really didn't mind the cold. After all, she'd spent most of her time outside as a child and a resistance to the cold had just come naturally.

Her brown eyes flitting from one person to the next, she offered them all gentle smiles. There was still that slight edge of that panic, that tug of fear that one of them would somehow just know and lash out at her for it.

And even though it'd been months and such a thing hadn't happened, the paranoia that it would hadn't left.

Giving her head a small shake, she paused long enough to rub at her temples, a sigh escaping her lips. All this uncertainty was going to give her a headache.

Looking up, her gaze fell on a woman not that far away. Tilting her head slightly, her forehead creased. She seemed almost familiar. Stepping towards her, she stood above her, staring down at the blonde uncertainly.

"Adria?" she asked, the name popped into her head, and a smile spread across her lips. "Is that you?"

Adria stared at the owner of the voice for a second, before recognition flitted across her features. "Marianne, was it? And yes, I'm Adria," she confirmed with a nod and offered a smile.

It had been quite a while since she had seen the woman, after the time they had first met at the club where she worked. The brunette was a frequent, and the Muggle woman had had the pleasure of meeting her, while she was on her way to the stage.

A part of Adria wished that Marianne hadn't told Nate about her job as a stripper, and including the club's name. It had obviously been too much for him to endure, and the blonde had probably made it more difficult for him.

"What brings you here?" Adria questioned curiously, ignoring the nagging voices in her mind. Would the brown haired woman be knowing where Nate is?

Jesus, she did not think it was possible to miss a person so terribly.

"It's nice to see you again," Marianne chirped, grinning at the woman. Plopping down beside her, she fixed her brown eyes on her. "So, how's everything?"

It'd been months since she'd seen her last, and really, she hadn't changed much. She was still as pretty, even more so in the cold. Blushing at her thoughts, though it could easily be brushed off by a natural flush of her cheeks from the weather, the witch glanced down at her feet awkwardly.

"Me?" she glanced back up, self-conciously reaching up to ruffle at her brown hair. "I just dyed my hair. Over there." She tilted her head in the direction of the salon before returning her gaze to the blonde. "You?"

"It's nice to see you too," Adria smiled softly and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. "Everything is going good actually," she replied, though she felt something was missing, just by admitting it out loud. "I mean, things are not so great, but I suppose it could be worse," she murmured, as she thought of her cancer-fighting mother.

And even thoughts of Nate crossed her mind.

The English woman grinned, "Well, the hairdresser did a pretty good job I must say, because the colour looks amazing on you. Either that, or it is just your natural beauty," she nudged the brunette's shoulder teasingly. "It is my day off from the club today, so I figured I could roam around a bit and do nothing. In fact, I got so desperate that I even closed down my bookstore just so I could go off somewhere," she chuckled.

Marianne grinned, "Well that's good. It's always great when things go right, isn't it?" She let out a little hum, fiddling with the buttons on her coat. Everything seemed to be going her way these days. It was nice, a pleasant reprieve from when it hadn't. "Things will get better," she said consolingly. "They always do."

She didn't want to think about when they didn't.

She blushed a deep scarlet, ducking her head shyly. "Thank you," she murmured, as she finally allowed herself to look back up at Adria. "Doing nothing's always a great way to spend a day," the head of house agreed, continuing to rub at her still blushing cheeks.

The blonde shook her head slowly and bit her lip, "I do not expect things to get better anytime soon, but I am always hoping." In fact, it was almost a blessing that Nate offered to help her with the store and with her mother, it definitely bought her comfort knowing there was someone she could rely on.

"Do you always blush at compliments?" Adria smiled lightly and winked. "We women most certainly deserve our share of praise, and it does not necessarily have to come from the males," she twirled a strand of her hair between her fingers.

"So how have you been?" She asked Marianne, gaze locked on hers.

"Hope," Marianne whispered, her brown eyes sweeping around them. "It's the only thing we really have, don't we?" She returned her gaze to the blonde, a small smile on her face. "But if you ever need help with anything, I'm here." She nodded her head a few times.

"Something like that," she muttered under her breath. What was with her and her crushes on people who'd never like her back? She'd spent enough time with Nate to know that there was something going on between the two of them, whether the brunet thought it or not. She nodded carefully, "That is true."

Merlin, her eyes were beautiful. They were just the most amazing shade, somewhere between grey and green, and for a moment, Marianne forgot how to speak. She could have easily spent her entire life staring into Adria's eyes. Finally looking away, her gaze focused instead on the woman's hair as she stammered out, "I - I've been good. Great even. Well, not great."

She ran a hand through her hair nervously. "Getting beat up wasn't great. But don't worry." She met Adia's eyes again and her heart stopped. Swallowing hard, her gaze fell to her lap. "I - I'm fine. All healed up. Like nothing ever happened.

"Teaching keeps me busy. Students are a handful. Kind of crazy." She bit at her bottom lip to keep herself from telling the woman about just how crazy her students could be. She couldn't just tell her about magic. No matter how much she wanted to.

Adria looked at the brunette in surprise, an expression nearly resembling the one she had shown towards Nate, "You are ready to help me? Like, seriously? Thank you Marianne, that's really good to know," she told softly, wondering why it had taken her so long to find these kinds of people.

"Are you alright?" The blonde asked her friend concernedly. It wasn't that she was uncomfortable by the woman's stare, it was more so of curiosity than anything. She had no expertise in this area and it's always been like that.

Before she could give it further thought, she heard the bad news. "What the fuck?! Someone beat you up?! Who was it?!" Adria demanded instantly, anger flashing in her stormy eyes for a moment. Forcing herself to calm down, she turned to her side and held her friend's chin, making her look at him, "You do not have to pretend it is nothing when it is clearly something," she said, her voice quiet.

"Handful, you say? Well, that certainly sounds like fun. I'm sure you must never be having a moment of boredom then," the blonde gave a small grin. "Why do you say they are so crazy, though?"

She couldn't help the grin that spread across her face at Adria's expression. "Yes," she said, laughing softly. "I'm 100% serious. I'd love to help. You're my friend after all."

And just being her friend was good enough. It had to be.

"Yes," she squeaked out, her skin flushing again as she stared down at her lap. "Fine. I'm fine." She couldn't tell her. The last time she'd told someone, she'd paid for it in pain and blood.

"I - I - I don't know!" She stared up into Adria's eyes, having no option in the matter. Closing her eyes against the sudden flurry of emotions, her words were quick. "I - I was just in London one day. A - And these men just came up to me and I don't even know why and they - they -" propositioned me and I said no and told them why and suffered for it. Marianne shook her head, only noticing she was crying when her tears began to freeze to her face.

"It is true. It's wild there." A small smile flitted across her face, which almost instantly fell at the blonde's question. "Well, you know children. They're nuts." She gave her head an amused shake, hating herself for the lie. "Though, some of them are only four years younger than me. I can actually remember some of them from when I went there."

"Alright, since you are so wiling to help me, you should definitely expect a call from me anytime during the next few days," Adria told with a small grin of her own. And though it all seemed light, she wasn't joking in the least. Seeing as both her store and her mother needed taking care off, she could not do it alone.

She hated asking for help from anyone, but she had no choice.

Shocked at Marianne's outburst and her tears, the blonde felt momentarily awkward and helpless, not sure what to do. Normally it was her in situations involving tear shed, with no one to comfort her, but now it was the other way around. Deciding to go with her instinct, Adria immediately pulled the woman into a hug and wiped away the tears. "Hey, you do not need to talk about it if you do not wish to," she told softly and bit her lip, feeling guilty and more curious at the same time.

Then again, her inner scientist was always curious about things she didn't understand.

Adria frowned lightly at the woman's vague answer, but nodded her head slowly, "Yes, I suppose that is true. Oh, that's a good thing yes? They can relate to you and all that, since they are acquainted with you already."

"And I'll be there like this," Marianne grinned, snapping her fingers. If only she could tell Adria just how true that was. "What are friends for, right?"

She gave her head a small shake, gasping for air. "No - no. It's not - I want to." Part of her didn't want to. Part of her wanted to deny and pretend that this had never happened. But Marianne was sure that she couldn't ever do that. She had to accept what had happened - truly accept it - before she could ever, truly recover. "I feel better when I do. It's not much, but even a little bit's good, right?"

Almost hesitantly, she wrapped her arms around the blonde, resting her head on her shoulder. It was nice, having someone to hold.

"Most of them don't remember me," the head of house gave her head an amused shake. "I must not have one of those faces that everyone remembers."

"I'm assuming that friends are always ready to help, because I really wouldn't know," Adria replied honestly. Middle school and high school were the days she would be taunted and teased. Of course, she'd try to take it in good humour, but at times, it got to the point of extremeties. It was only at uni, that she found solace.

She nodded her head in understanding, "Okay, you can talk to me once you calm down and feel comfortable, alright? There's no hurry. Even a tiny amount is good Marianne, it is one step closer to the progress," she said, her grip on the woman tightening slightly.

"I think they just don't possess very good memory perhaps," the researcher corrected her friend with a grin. "Why would anyone else forget you on purpose?"

Not having friends.... Marianne couldn't imagine what it was like to not have friends. She'd always had an easy time making them. Merlin, she was convinced that she'd be dead if it wasn't for them. Absentmindedly running her fingers down her arms, memories of Bonnie saving her life flashed behind her eyelids.

Pulling herself back into reality with a small shake of her head, a tiny smile graced the petite woman's features as she reached over to pat Adria's shoulder. "Well, now you'll know, because I'm your friend and I'm not going anywhere."

She nodded, hiccuping, "Okay - I - okay." She nodded again, finding solace in the other woman's arms. "Just, give me a moment." She hated her voice then, so weak, so vulnerable. She just wanted to go back to the way she was. Sometimes she felt she did, but for the most part she just felt sorry for herself.

"I like that idea better," Marianne admitted, grinning. "Who knows? Kids are weird. Maybe they don't like remembering their professors as students. I bet it makes them feel old."

"That is very nice to hear, thank you," the blonde smiled lightly, though on the inside, she wasn't feeling very convinced. She had known people that uttered those same words, and ultimately let her down. But she was willing to take a chance with Marianne.

Adria felt guilty for not knowing how to calm down the brunette. What comforting words could she offer? All she could do was listen, which she was more than ready to do. "Please, take all the time you need," she said once more, running her hand up and down her friend's back. "Are you sure you want to tell me? I just don't like the effect it is having on you," she said hesitantly.

"Oh yes, that could be true as well," she agreed. "It is sort of lame to befriend a Professor these days, huh?" She shook her head amusedly, before a small smile spread across her face in nervousness, "I have a question, if you do not mind. Nate claims to know you, so I was wondering if he ever said anything about me...?"

As soon as the words were out of her mouth, she felt like an idiot. "Never mind, forget I asked," she mumbled, closing her eyes tightly.

"You don't need to thank me," she shook her head, smiling up at her friend. "It's the truth. Just believing me is good enough."

Despite the layers of clothing that separated Adria's hand from her skin, it didn't stop her skin from heating up from the contact. Her luck was just astronomically bad, wasn't it? Why couldn't she feel like this about people who had a chance of liking her back? "I'm going to have to tell people sooner or later. I can't spend my whole life unable to say it."

Reaching over, she nudged the woman softly, "Hey! You're friends with me, aren't you? So are you calling me lame?" She grinned teasingly. At the question, she tilted her head slightly. At the mention of Nate, a tiny, sad smile crossed her face. She liked the two of them together, she did, but the selfish part of her wanted Adria to talk about her like that.

"He's mentioned you," she nodded. "He really does like you."

"I believe you," the blonde told with a decisive nod. She had no reason not to. After all, Marianne had proved to be nothing but supportive and genuine. For now, Adria supposed it was good enough.

She ran her fingers through her hair, "I know, but if you are not ready at this moment, I do not mind. Usually, it does some time for the victim to heal from such a traumatizing experience and even more time to actually narrate it," she stated. "But then again, that depends on the person's mental state, I suppose."

"Oh, I was just saying that from a student's point of view," she said and chuckled softly. "For me on the other hand, it is not at all lame to know you." At the brunette's sad smile, Adria frowned, "I'm sorry, did I say something wrong?" Then her mind came to a conclusion and her face fell. "You like Nate, don't you? I did not know that obviously..." she trailed off, her cheeks flushing from embarrasment.

"I just do not get why he would like me," she told softly, though she felt slightly more hopeful. "He's a special guy, I can tell, and he should find someone who's upto his standards, should he not?"

"Good." She grinned. "More people should. Not that everyone thinks I'm lying, but you know. I spend my days surrounded by children. Some have authority problems." The French women gave her head a small shake. "I was never like that when I was their age."

Marianne nodded. "I know." She bit her lip, glancing around them. "I've been through - well, it wasn't worse, but...I don't know. Watching other people go through things hurts more, you know? You can't help." Especially when they've already done it and you find yourself trying to pick up the pieces. She sighed softly, memories running through her head before she shook them away.

"You'd better have," she joked, shoving Adria softly. "Or you might not be forgiven." Marianne's eyes widened, protests already forming in her mind. But she let them all die, biting on her lip to stop herself from speaking them. She trusted Adria. Part of her knew that she wouldn't freak out if she knew, that she'd accept her. But the other part of her was too scared that she'd get beat up again. "Looks like you got me," she mumbled, strands of her dark hair falling into her face, partially obscuring her.

"You are up to those standards," Marianne said softly, peeking up through her hair. "Adria, you're amazing. You're pretty, you're smart. You're sweet, you're kind. I wouldn't be surprised if you had secret admirers."

"I was not like that either, never really got a chance to," Adria admitted. "Especially since I skipped a few grades, I was never surrounded by children of my age. My younger days pretty much consisted of being teased and left alone," she frowned. "It is kind of silly when I think about it now, but it was not back then."

She nodded her head once more, feeling more guilty and sad for Marianne. It was obvious that the woman had suffered quite a bit, and a deep part of Adria wanted to try to heal her. It's really unfair of life to be a bitch to people who clearly do not deserve it. "Just because other people have bad things happening to them, does not mean you can neglect your own problems," she replied quietly.

The blonde was not that surprised at Marianne's confession. After all, it's kind of impossible not to like Nate. "Did you ask him out, then?" She asked, her voice growing quieter and blushed once more. "I mean, I'm sure he'll get over me after a while, and then I'm even more positive that he'd love to go out with you."

She did not want to be a bad friend. And though it broke her heart to have uttered those words, she knew she was speaking the truth, if it meant getting to see Nate happy. And that too, withsome one as wonderful as the brunette.

"Thank you, but I am very much ordinary compared to Nate, aren't I? I just do not want my heart to be thrown around again, Marianne, I can't handle it," she shook her head helplessly. "It was so bad the first time, I do not fall into it again."

"That - That's terrible," Marianne squeaked out, eyes widening. Before she realized what she was doing, she had reached over, grabbing her crush's hands in hers, squeezing them. "And it's not silly. Not at all," her brown gaze became steely in determination; Adria needed to hear this. "Being bullied is one of the worst things to go through. I've seen what it can do to a person. And it's far from pretty. Far from it." Staring down at their joined hands, she flushed pink, letting go as if she'd been burnt.

"I know, but compared to that," her voice shook, her eyes sliding closed. "This is nothing."

She swallowed hard, trying her best to ignore the painful pangs of her heart. "I haven't - I won't - I can't." Marianne met the grey-green eyes in front of her, biting at her bottom lip. "Because I know you two have something so special. This won't be the first time I've fallen for someone I can't have. I'll be alright." Her last words were little more than a whisper. As much as it would hurt to see Adria and Nate together, she'd simply have to deal.

She gave her head a meagre shake. "He's not going to. You two are perfect together. And I am not going to ruin it because I have a crush. I know what true love is when I see it. And what I feel isn't it. But you two have it. I'm sure of it.

"Nate would never break your heart. He is head over heels in love with you, Adria. Anyone can see it." Her voice cracked, but she pushed aside her own feelings. They didn't matter. "You two deserve each other."

"I suppose 'geeks' like me weren't very popular back then," Adria joked weakly, brushing aside Marianne's comment. She held onto her friend's hand tightly as well, oblivious to the brunette's intention or discomfort. The blonde was never good at figuring out feelings behind people's actions. "It was not so bad, compared to what they used to do to the other kids," she whispered. She had never talked to anyone about those days of hers; this was the first time. "And hey, I turned out fine, so really, it was no big deal," she shrugged and looked questioningly at the woman at her flushed expression.

"It is not nothing if affected you so badly," she stated with a firm nod of her head.

"But Marianne, if you like him so much, I think you should take a chance," she told quietly. It was not what she was thinking, but honestly, she was not sure how she felt about Nate. Sure, she liked him a lot, but was it something that would last? "Do not lie to me, you do not sound like you are going to be fine," she said and hugged the brunette tightly, before pulling away, but keeping her arms around her.

However, at the professor's next statement, she panicked just like she had when Nate himself had confessed that to her. "I know, he told me so," she whispered, not meeting her friend's eyes. "But I think it was probably just the spur of the moment or something for him to declare something like that."

Suddenly, the horrible memories of her break up came to mind, and she felt tears in her eyes. She was sure she could never love anyone else; Ryan had ruined that for her. And every time she had a crush on a man, it never lasted, simply because she was terrified.

"Please do not be upset Marianne," she pleaded softly, not wanting to think about her own freak out. "I can talk to him if you want, I'm sure he'd be willing to give you a chance and then, I'm sure it will work out."

She could not love Nate. It was impossible. Or could she really let go, before one of them got hurt?

"It doesn't matter if you weren't popular or not," Marianne whispered, shaking her head. She'd seen people break down right in front of her, popular and not. "It still shouldn't happen. It should never happen." She'd seen just how far people would go to get away from it all. Chewing on her bottom lip, she shook her head. "But - bullies are just the worst people out there. It doesn't matter if it wasn't all that bad. It was bad enough. Just the fact they bullied you at all makes it a big deal."

Just the idea of anyone bullying her friends made her angry.

She shrugged her shoulders, frowning down at her feet. "But I'll be alright. So eventually, it'll be nothing. Just a distant memory."

Marianne glanced at Adria, her shoulders shaking. She could hardly look at the blonde, not when she was lying to her. But she couldn't - wouldn't - tell her the truth. Not now, not when she was still terrified that she'd get beaten up all over again.

"What's the point? If I know that the person I want to be with doesn't feel the same way about me - and don't tell me I'm wrong - I know I'm right - then it'll just be awkward." Looking up at Adria, she met her grey-green eyes. "I don't want to ruin our friendship," she whispered.

"See? If he told you that, then he means it. You know Nate. He doesn't say anything without meaning it." A tiny, sad smile spread across her face. If she couldn't be with Adria, then she'd sure as hell make sure she was happy with someone else.

At Adria's suggestion, her eyes widened and she shook her head furiously. "No. No. You - You can't. Please don't. Even if he did give me a chance I - I couldn't take it. It wouldn't be ...right."

"It is all a part of life Marianne, what is the point in complaining about it now?" Adria was never the one to show her weakness outside. Even if it hurt, she would never admit it. But it seemed like that had changed, at least in certain situations. "I did have this one friend, whom I met in high school," she smiled lightly as she thought of Logan. "He had always tried his best to stop people from hurting me, and he did succeed. But after the four years, he ran away and I never saw him again." And though she wasn't aware of it then, she knew she had liked Logan as more than a friend.

A part of her still missed him everyday.

"But I cannot be with Nate knowing that you have feelings for him, I cannot ignore that," she told softly. "It would be wrong of me to do so. And besides, I am not capable of loving someone, the thought alone terrifies me," she shook her head. "And it is not going to ruin our friendship, I wouldn't let something so trivial get between us," she assured.

The blonde looked at her friend, still feeling helpless, "But that's thing Marianne, I don't know Nate. How could he claim to love me after only months? He may not be lying, but such a declaration in short amount of time indicates that his feelings might change again."

It was not that Adria did not want him. In fact, she wanted him so bad that it was beginning to hurt when he was not around. Yet, the fear of falling was too great and she couldn't bring herself to let go.

"Do not worry about my involvement in this. He should at least know that you like him, right?" She asked quietly. "It is good if he gives you a chance, it means that he is not in love with me."

The feared part of her hoped his thoughts towards her would change.

"Friends," she smiled slightly, "They're just the best, aren't they?" They just made life easier. There were so many things she'd been through that she didn't think she would've ever been able to survive, if not for her friends. "He just vanished?" Marianne's smile disappeared, worry replacing it. "That - That's terrible. I can't even imagine what that's like."

At least when someone died, you at least knew that they were really and truly gone forever. You at least had that closure.

"Yes, you can," she whispered. "You have to. My feelings aren't - I'll be fine. I don't want you to waste this opportunity. Nate could be the best thing that ever happened to you. Your happiness," her words were interjected with a small poke to Adria's shoulder, the saddest of smiles on her face. "Is more important than mine. Always will be.

"How are you not.....?" She swallowed the lump forming in her throat, shaking her head. Gripping the woman's shoulders, she stared at her, trying her best to ignore the storm of emotions swirling around in the pit of her stomach. "Everyone's capable of love. Even the worst of people can."

Her heart swelled at that admission, that trivial things wouldn't ruin their friendship. But her sexuality, her crush on the blonde in front of her, that wasn't trivial. What if it did ruin their friendship? Marianne wasn't sure she'd be able to stand herself.

"Might," she pointed out. "Might. There's that chance, that very real chance, that his feelings won't change. The way he talks about you, Adria," she shook her head, sighing softly. "That'll never change." And if it did, she was going to do everything she could to change it back.

"But he is in love with you, and I'm pretty sure you feel the same way. And that's why I can't say how I feel. It'd make everything so awkward." Clutching her hands together, she shrunk in on herself, looking much smaller than she was. "And I don't want that."
