- Spoiler:
JJeh chose the angsty one.
“Down.” The man’s voice washed over her, even as his eyes did, causing her blush to only darken. Her fingers trembled as she tugged the strap closest to him back onto her shoulder. Dark brown eyes stayed safely on the ground between her feet, though she glanced up at the other man occasionally. Luckily, he seemed to amused – she hoped for his sake that was amusement on his face – to be worried about her seeming disrespectful.
“The floor above the party, actually.” The man continued, gaze flicking to Feliks as she shrank into his shadow, unconsciously evading Liks’s touch. “You probably weren’t told, but there are rooms for this kind of thing. We keep them all in a- more appropriate environment.” If it was possible for her blush to get any darker than it would, but rather than do that, her gaze went to the other woman present, wondering what she’d find there.
The redhead from earlier met her eyes, but what was there brought Karma pause. There was no quiet obedience, only anger. Only hate. Alarm spread through her, but she kept her expression embarrassed, as well as confused.
The redhead winked, reaching behind her almost innocently.
Karma didn’t think, she moved.
Three things happened at once.
The first was the hint of metal as the redhead shifted her weight, the movement fast enough that anyone not looking directly at her would have missed it for what it was, a weapon in an enclosed space. The second was a tug, pulling Liks out of the girl’s sights and against her as the gun the redhead had pulled from the depths of her dress placed a bullet where he’d been standing. The third was the other man, shouting and in a sudden burst of bravery leaping at her, only to gain a bullet to the stomach.
Silence.
Karma, forcing herself to be calm and breathe evenly, looked down at the redhead now pinned beneath the slowly dying man she had come to hate. Her hold on the boy against her tightened and an anger quite unlike any she’d known before darkened her expression.
“Kitty!”
The disgust she felt only heightened with the sound of her “name”. Where had the woman even gotten a gun? Did she plan to just walk into the room and slaughter every male there, in the hopes he was as bad as her own was? Her hold on Feliks loosened, then slipped away as if it had never been there, though her gaze on the other woman didn’t falter.
Their eyes locked, the girl’s pupils slowly spreading until only a ring of bright blue iris was left of what used to be her iris. Karma’s voice was calm, quiet, softly musing and almost soothing.
“You almost killed him.”
The usual look of onyx pleasant obedience vanished in the wake of fear, which quickly turned to terror, then pain. The girl went rigid, then began struggling, silent sobs that gave way to a soft, haunting wailing the only sound that could be heard. Karma’s expression had disappeared, all emotions having slid from her face at the mention of her name. She would not go home and tell her son that his father would not be returning. She would not take the hard drive from him and leave his body as a casualty, as was the policy. She would not-
She would not be alone again.
