Sitting just there

Aurelie sat down next to the enchanted lake. A book dangled from her hand, and sighing, she opened it up to a page and started reading.
"This is boring," she said and threw a pebble into the water.
There was a rustle in the undergrowth.

Jake heard a female voice and decided to investigate. Stepping through the undergrowth, he saw a pretty girl throwing stones into the lake.

"Uh...hello," he said.

The girl whirled around.

"Eep!" Aurelie squeaked, much to her embarrassment. It was a boy-around her age. "Um, hello! I'm Aurelie. And you are?" It was obvious that he was a student, but she hadn't seen him around before.

"I'm Jake," Jake said, outstretching a hand and shaking the girl's hand. "Jake Ornery. I transferred into Hufflepuff this year." He grinned a little bit. "What house are you in?"

"I'm in Hufflepuff too!" Aurelie said, delighted. "You're the only boy, I think. Transferred? From where?"

"I was homeschooled," Jake said. "What classes are you taking?"

"A bunch!" Aurelie said, scowling. "I forgot...urm....haha." She grinned sheepishly and brushed her light brown hair out of her eyes. "So, you came at the right time. It's winter break...have you met Mel and the gang?"

"Yeah," Jake said. "They sound really nice. They greeted me and said all these nice things and showed me...sorta...around. I can't wait for classes to start."

"Yeah.." Aurelie said. "Make sure to get there early. professor DeLuna used to be really lenient, but now even she is saying, 'Points taken off if you aren't on time'. So, you might want to get there early." She smiled.

"Nice to know," Jake said, smiling shyly at Aurelie. She really was nice, he realized. And he didn't have that much experience with making friends, so it was nice to have her as a friend. "Thanks for telling me. So, what spells have you learned?"

"Erm..." Aurelie said, trying to think. "We've learned Avis, which is the spell for birds, and a few other, even though I don't really remember them." The air grew cold and she shivered.

"Oh!" Jake said. "Here," he said, taking off his heavy trench coat and offering it to Aurelie, revealing the warm woolen sweater underneath.

Aurelie shook her head. "I couldn't possibly take it!" she said. When Jake kept offering, she smiled and let him drape it on her. "Thanks," she said quietly. "But won't you be cold?"

"Nah," Jake said, scoffing. "I have more than two layers."
And then it started to rain.
"What are the odds," Jake said.

Aurelie laughed, giggling. "What are the odds?" she yelped, shaking raindrops out of her hair. "Let's get under that tree," she said, running under a tree with thick branches.

The tree provided some shelter, Jake realized when they went under there. "So," he said awkwardly, trying to cut through the tension, "What other students are there?"

"Well, there's Mel, Mary, Allie and Ari.." Aurelie said, frowning.

Jake chuckled. "Yeah, I know them," he said.

Maria wandered through the rain without a coat or anything, just the kimono under her black robe. She spotted a boy and a girl huddled under a tree and waved.
"Hey!" she shouted, waving. "Mind if I join you?!"

"Um, no," Aurelie said. "Sure."

Maria ran over and joined the two under the tree. "I'm sorry to intrude," she apologised, breathless. "I was going to the Forbidden Forest when it started pouring, and I figured it would be quicker to find shelter around here. I'm Maria Akazukin, sixth year. Have I seen you before?"

"Yeah, I think we've met," Aurelie said. "This is Jake."

"I thought so!" Maria said confidently. "Aurelie, right? I think I met you when you were practicing Occlumency. Nice to meet you, Jake." She bowed, traditional Japanese greeting.

"Are you Japanese?" Jake asked, interested. "I traveled to Japan for a few days. It was really cool there."

"Really?" Aurelie said, pulling the edges of his coat around herself and shivering even more. "What other places have you traveled?"
